Energy Planning Week 2026
Good planning underpins every successful energy transition. Turning political ambition into long-term scenarios, credible roadmaps and investment-ready pipelines takes deliberate, sustained work that brings together policy, technical delivery and finance. As countries move from climate commitments to implementation, the quality of that planning increasingly determines whether transitions are timely, affordable and just.
Initiated in 2018, IRENA's Long-Term Energy Scenarios (LTES) Network and the Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM) Initiative on LTES connect government planners and practitioners directly with one another. Together they provide a peer-to-peer platform to exchange knowledge and good practices in the use and development of scenarios, promoting wider and more effective use of LTES in government for energy and climate policymaking. Much of this exchange has taken place through the International Forum on Long-Term Energy Scenarios, the Network's annual flagship event, which has brought hundreds of scenario practitioners from government, academia, technical institutions and industry since 2019. GET.transform complements this peer exchange with direct, country-level support. A technical assistance programme implemented by GIZ and co-funded by the European Union and several European governments, it works with individual countries to advance their power sector transformations and turn plans into investment-ready projects. The Global Coalition for Energy Planning (GCEP) brings these strands together at a political level. Launched in June 2025 following Brazil's 2024 G20 Presidency, with IRENA serving as its Secretariat, GCEP is a high-level platform that connects planning and finance ministries to close the investment gap in the energy transition.
In 2026, this work converges in a new flagship format: Energy Planning Week 2026, co-hosted by IRENA and GET.transform. Taking place two weeks after the close of COP31 and ahead of the seventeenth IRENA Assembly in January 2027, the Week brings the energy planning community together to translate political commitments into the scenarios, roadmaps and investment-ready projects that make them real.
Target audience
Energy Planning Week 2026 gathers government energy planners and policymakers, regulators, utilities and system operators, financiers and development institutions, intergovernmental organizations, industry and the modelling community.
Topics and agenda
Discussions will span the full planning value chain, from scenarios to investment signals to implementation, including planning governance and institutional capacity, electrification and the COP31 commitments, data governance and sharing, artificial intelligence in energy planning, energy security and resilience, climate risks and adaptation, and the planning signals needed to unlock investments. Format and registration
The event is hybrid (on-site and virtual). On-site places are limited and will be allocated first to members and partners of the LTES, GCEP and GET.transform initiatives, and confirmed speakers.
