South East Europe Regional Initiative

The South East Europe (SEE) Regional Initiative was launched in 2017 with the signing of the Communiqué on Accelerating the Uptake of Renewables in South East Europe, underscoring the region’s substantial, cost-competitive, yet largely untapped renewable energy potential. This landmark agreement reaffirmed IRENA’s commitment to supporting SEE countries in their energy transition through a dedicated Action Plan.

Since its inception, the Initiative has successfully delivered targeted support to policymakers and investors across key areas, including:

1. Mapping renewable energy resources:
   • Creation of suitability maps for solar PV and wind: Investment opportunities in South-East Europe;
   • Report on the Cost-competitive renewable power generation: Potential across South East Europe;
2. Long-term planning for RE deployment:
   • Regional energy transition outlook: European Union;
   • Renewable energy roadmap: Eastern Partnership;
3. Socio-economic benefits of renewable energy:
   • Workshop on socio-economic benefits of renewable energy;
